What is a 14er?
From Wikipedia:
In mountaineering terminology in the United States, a fourteener is a mountain that exceeds 14,000 feet (4,267.2 m) above mean sea level.
“The importance of fourteeners is greatest in Colorado, which has the majority of such peaks in North America.”
There are 53 “official” 14ers in the state of Colorado. Unofficially, there are a few more, but if one follows the rule of topographic prominence where the connecting saddle must drop at least 300 feet between two peaks, then there are “officially” only 53. If the saddle does not, then the peak with the lower elevation is usually considered a sub-peak of its higher neighbor. The highest peak in Colorado is Mount Elbert at 14,443 feet. The lowest-ranked 14er in Colorado is Sunshine Peak at 14,001 feet.
